This story was really important to me because not only did I get to write about something I'm passionate about, but I also got to interview three Major League Baseball players. I had this idea at the beginning of the school year, and it was in the works for months before I started writing it. I learned how much effort needs to go into a big story, there were countless conversations with the baseball coaches not only for interviews but to set the interview with the players up before they left for spring training. I found a good balance between journalism and being a fan because if you’re too much of a fan, you may not get what you need for the story, but it was important to show my passion to get people to open up.

I wrote this story because I wanted to give students interested in playing college athletics more information about the recruiting process. I talked to several of our school's signed players, including University of Alabama and University of Kentucky signees. I also got to talk with the recruitment coordinator at Top Select Volleyball Academy. It was really fun to be able to take a closer look at what goes into the recruitment process.

This was my first time covering football, so I really had to learn more about the rules and nuances of the game. After writing this story, I enjoy watching football games a lot more because I have a better understanding of what's going on. I got great insights from both the players and coaches about the strategies used on the field. While my ultimate goal is to cover baseball, I understand the importance of being well versed in all different sports even if it’s a quick story covering one game to an in-depth feature, you have to know the sport.

Sports News

Wins are more fun to cover, but a lot of the games I’ve covered are losses. I've taken a more sensitive approach when doing postgame interviews with players and coaches. I try not to fixate on the fact the team lost while understanding I need to get the material because I’m the reporter covering what happened.
