Hello!

I am the sports editor of Hagerty’s newspaper and website, The BluePrint. I cover all sports but I am especially passionate about baseball. Our sports coverage has been inconsistent in the past, so I’ve done my best to bring some energy back to the group. Despite the challenges, I've learned a lot and loved every minute of it!

My Story

I’ve gained my love and knowledge for sports and especially baseball from both of my parents who had careers working in Major League Baseball. My dad pitched for the Yankees before I was born and spent the remainder of his career in the big leagues as a pro-scout while my mom was an on-air reporter for the Red Sox and Nationals. I've grown up around the game of baseball my entire life and I intend on pursuing a career in the sport.

Honestly, newspaper wasn’t on my radar until the last month of school in my junior year when I went and asked my freshman year journalism teacher if there was any way I could cover our school’s baseball team. He suggested I join the staff and invited me to guest write an article for their last home game of the season. That led me to joining the staff for my senior year where I’ve covered a majority of the school’s sports. Since this is my first year, there has been a lot of trial and error from the first time using the microphones to posting my first story on my own.

My Role

As the sports editor I am responsible for knowing what sports need to be covered, who's going to cover them, and when the story will run. Since covering sports has been inconsistent in the past, this year I've tried to make it a priority with our staff. I am always eager to try new things for the sake of our sports coverage! Because of my extensive sports background, I am able to help those who haven't covered sports as frequently navigate their stories. I do this by providing suggestions on who to talk to and specifics on how to cover that sport. One of my favorite moments so far has been explaining baseball to one of our reporters that was writing a brief on the baseball team's first game of the season. I helped explain certain baseball stats to her and how to implement them correctly into the story as well as some of the baseball language that is commonly used.

Story Writing Process

Step 1: Preplan

The first step of my story writing process is to create a preplan. This is where I gather all of the initial information about the story I am going to be writing. This is also where I figure out the angle, who I will be interviewing, what types of questions I am going to ask, and any other additional research.

Step 2: Plan & Rough

The second step would be to create a plan. This is where I update the document with the questions I asked and also keep the interview answers here too. After that I write the rough draft and then send it to my editors for review.

Step 3: Final Draft & Post

The final step would be updating the story after receiving edits and then choosing a featured image and inputting any other elements that go with it. Lastly, I create a draft and post it.
